Long before Western performance horse events filled arenas, the maneuvers seen in competition were part of everyday work on ranches. Stopping, turning, rating cattle and reading a cow were skills built out of necessity by working cowboys and cowgirls, and those traditions remain at the center of the Cowboy Heritage Ranch Challenge at The Run For A Million. This year, Markel Insurance will once again help celebrate that connection as the returning sponsor of the Cowboy Heritage Ranch Challenge.
The Run For A Million will be held August 11 through 15 at the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The Cowboy Heritage Ranch Challenge will begin Thursday morning, August 13, with the rein work, while the cow work will be held Friday, August 14, during the ticketed performance.
The Cowboy Heritage Ranch Challenge showcases competitors from some of the most recognized working ranches in the United States and Mexico. These cowboys and cowgirls are not only talented horsemen and horsewomen, but also the people who use their horses every day as part of ranch life.

The 2026 Cowboy Heritage Ranch Challenge will feature 10 ranches: 6666 Ranch, Las Tunas Ranch, O RO Ranch, Pitchfork Ranch, R.A. Brown Ranch, Silver Spur Ranches, Singleton Ranches, Tongue River Ranch, Wagonhound Ranch and XIT Ranch.
Last year, Lydia Brown of R.A. Brown Ranch claimed the Cowboy Heritage Ranch Challenge championship, adding her name to the list of competitors who have represented the ranching industry on one of the biggest stages in Western performance horse competition.
Nathan Canaday, President of Operations, Horse Division Manager and Veterinarian at the 6666 Ranch, is a driving force behind the Cowboy Heritage Ranch Challenge.
